Road Rogue Operation

(Johor Bahru, 13th) The Johor police set up roadblocks in various districts, launching “Operation Drunk Driving” and “Road Rogue Operation,” resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals suspected of drunk driving.

The Director of Johor Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Unit, Gurmit Singh, issued a statement today, stating that the police conducted checks and interceptions of 736 road users from 10 pm last night until 1:30 am today.

"During the operation, 11 drivers, aged between 27 and 53, were found to have exceeded the alcohol limit during testing."

He mentioned that the police invoked Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 to detain drivers caught drunk driving.

Upon conviction, individuals could face imprisonment for up to 2 years, fines ranging from RM 1,000 to RM 30,000, and a suspension of their driving license for at least 2 years.

The police carried out the enforcement operation for over 3 hours, intercepting 736 individuals and 573 vehicles. They issued 230 traffic violation summonses for various offenses.

Gurmit Singh emphasized that the operation aimed to crackdown on stubborn drunk drivers and motorcycle gangs. During the operation, the police also seized 17 motorcycles.

WHAT IS SECTION 45A (1) ?

Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 states that a person who drives a motor vehicle on a road without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for another persons using the road shall be guilty of an offence. The punishment for this offence is a fine of not less than four thousand ringgit and not more than ten thousand ringgit, and imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months 1.
